The School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park is seeking a scholar (tenure, tenure track, or professor of the practice) whose academic background and professional achievements make her/him a likely future leader in our program in international development policy, one of the fastest growing multidisciplinary teaching and research areas at the School. Salary is competitive.
Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) with a specialization in public policy, development ethics, economics, law, political economy, political science, social development, or other development-related area, or anticipate receiving such a degree before the academic year 2011-12. University of Edinburgh: Teaching Fellow in Mind and Embodied Cognition

The Fishbein Center for the History of Science and the Committee on Conceptual and Historical Studies of Science at the University of Chicago invite applications for a two-year "visiting lectureship," starting in September 2011. Recipients should have received the PhD within the last five years, and not already hold a tenure-track position. Their expertise should be in the history and philosophy of biology (broadly conceived), with substantial knowledge and research interests in a particular area of recent research. Candidates who can address problems both in history and philosophy will be favored, as well as those who are able to engage colleagues and students beyond a narrow range. We offer unique opportunities for interactions among philosophers, historians, and scientists across the Natural and Human Sciences, and relevant humanities. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the CHSS workshops in History and Philosophy of Science, the Human Sciences, and our Seminar on Important Things; we also expect the individual to participate in our philosophy of biology reading group. Teaching responsibilities: two courses per year, at least one of which should be directed to undergraduates. Chicago is on a quarter system; so there are three terms to the academic year. The Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, seeks a postdoc, already in the possession of a PhD degree, for the Research Programme “Humanists as Philosophers: The Place of Renaissance Humanism in the History of Thought”, led by Professor Lodi Nauta and funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

The applicant can work on one of the themes delineated in the programme or on another theme as long as it ties in firmly with the main objectives of the programme. In either case, one is requested to write a research proposal. He/she is expected to write scholarly articles or a monograph, and will be asked to do some teaching.
Founded in 1614, the University of Groningen is the second-oldest university in the Netherlands. Its Faculty of Philosophy has an excellent reputation both in teaching and research, and occupies a top position in national rankings. It offers a lively and friendly intellectual community of about 50 teachers and researchers, and ca. 350 full-time students. A number of researchers come from abroad. The History of Philosophy department covers the entire history of philosophy from classical Antiquity to contemporary trends.
The University Library in Groningen is a good research library, while the other main university libraries in the Netherlands are reachable in 2-3 hours by train.

The Philosophy (Metaphysics and History of Philosophy) chair is dedicated to
teaching and research in the broad domain of Philosophy.
The teaching tasks focus mainly on the Philosophy Bachelor’s and Master’s
programme and the Philosophy Research Master’s programme. A number of minors
and electives are likewise offered (to see the curriculum, please refer to
the UvA’s digital Course Catalogue: www.studiegids.uva.nl). The Faculty’s
Bachelor’s programmes are taught within the College of Humanities; the
Master’s and doctorate programmes are administered within the Graduate
School for Humanities.
The research tasks focus on the study of Philosophy, especially metaphysics
and the history of philosophy, and are carried out within either the
Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) or the Institute of Culture
and History (ICH).
The Faculty has chosen three research priority areas for the 2009-2012
period: Cultural Heritage and Identities; Cultural Transformations and
Globalisation; Cognitive Modelling & Learning (interfaculty area).
Requirements
The new professor of Philosophy (Metaphysics and History of Philosophy) has
thorough knowledge of the field, as evidenced by his or her academic
background, publications and teaching history. S/he holds a doctoral degree
in this or a related discipline and has a good understanding of the domain
as a whole. S/he is an expert in classical metaphysical philosophy and is
well-versed in the history of philosophy.

The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of no more

The Department of Philosophy and the Australian Research Council Centre for Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders at Macquarie University (the host institution of the Centre) wish to appoint a Lecturer/Research Fellow. For the first 5 years, the appointment will be full-time involving 0.5 teaching and research in the Philosophy Department and 0.5 research only in the ARC Centre for Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders. After this initial 5 year period the position will revert to a 0.5 continuing teaching and research position in the Philosophy Department. (There is a strong possibility that the position will become a full-time position in Philosophy after the initial 5 year period, but this cannot be guaranteed.)
The Department of Philosophy is a pluralist teaching and research department. As Lecturer in Philosophy, the appointee will contribute to teaching in the Mind, Metaphysics and Meaning stream of the Philosophy Department’s undergraduate program and to the supervision of Honours and Postgraduate students in this stream. As Research Fellow in Cognitive Science, the appointee will conduct research in ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders at the host institution of Macquarie University. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to at least one of the Centre's programme areas in cognitive science: belief formation, language, memory, person perception, and reading. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to fostering research links between the Philosophy Department and the Centre.
