The Unit for History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) of the University of Sydney is seeking to recruit a new staff member. The appointment will be continuing, teaching and administration load comparable to leading research departments.

We welcome candidates with expertise in any field related to the various sub-disciplines of HPS. However, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in areas that will compliment the current research efforts of the Unit and of the university. The successful candidate will be expected to cooperate throughout HPS, and ideally will demonstrate an ability to converse with scientists and scholars from other disciplines.

As a discipline, HPS at Sydney has received the highest grade – 5 – in the recent Australian Research Council’s Excellence in Research in Australia (ERA) survey. The Unit for HPS is part of the Faculty of Science, and draws undergraduate and postgraduate students from both science and the humanities. It enjoys excellent relations with departments in the Arts faculty, in particular philosophy, history and Chinese studies, as well as with medicine, leading to collaborations in research and teaching.

The position is full-time continuing (tenure track) and is subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

Remuneration package: up to $109K p.a. including a base salary up to level B Step 3 of $93K p.a. (under current enterprise agreement a 2.5% increase also applies on a six monthly basis in addition to annual standard career step increments), leave loading and up to 17% superannuation. Visa sponsorship and some relocation cost support will be available for the successful appointee if required.

2 year Teaching Postdoctoral Positions

Tenure Track Position in Ethics

The University of Oregon Department of Philosophy is searching for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy with an area of specialization (AOS) in Ethics. The area of competence (AOC) is open, but the department is especially interested in those with teaching competence in Gender Theory, History of Philosophy, Social/Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, and Logic.

We are looking for someone who has a broad pluralistic orientation that encompasses a variety of perspectives, which must include being well-versed in approaches from within the analytic tradition. We want candidates who reach beyond moral theory to develop an engaged, embodied, culturally situated moral philosophy. Such a candidate would be interested in topics such as contemporary moral issues, environmental ethics, new research in moral psychology, and issues arising from gender, race, and cultural institutions.

Expectations of teaching include introductory, middle-level, and advanced undergraduate courses, graduate teaching in the area of specialization, mentoring of graduate student research, and directing theses at the undergraduate and graduate level. The University of Oregon is on the academic quarter system, and the standard teaching load is presently five courses across three terms each year.

Undergraduate teaching experience, an appropriate record of research and publication, and a Ph.D. are required. Salary will be competitive depending on qualifications.

1 PhD student in Natural Logic and Linguistic Semantics
1 PhD student in Computational Logic and Natural Reasoning

Individuals are encouraged to apply who have an interest in logical
and computational theories of ordinary reasoning, natural logic,
and/or linguistic semantics and who want to investigate these topics
in an interdisciplinary setting where linguistic investigation is
combined with tableau theorem proving and model checking. The
positions are part of the program "Towards Logics that Model Natural
Reasoning", funded by a Free Competition grant from the Netherlands
Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and led by Reinhard

These positions are open to candidates with a master's degree or
equivalent and successful candidates are required to complete a PhD
thesis within maximally four years.

We expect the willingness to work in an international

Associate Professor (W2) of Philosophy: Philosophy of Cultural Practice
Area of Specialization: Ethics (systematic/applied) and the Concepts of
Technology and Culture in a History of Ideas Perspective

According to §§25 and 26 NHG (Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Lower Saxony)
At the Braunschweig Institute of Technology Germany (founded in 1745), with its 13,000
students, the core disciplines engineering and natural sciences are closely linked to business
and social sciences, as well as the humanities and educational sciences. The Braunschweig
Institute of Technology is a member of both the Lower Saxony Alliance of Technical
Universities (NTH), and the TU9 German Institutes of Technology. Considered Europe’s
number 1 research region, Brunswick/Braunschweig is attractive for scientists and their
families.
The successful candidate will be qualified in central fields of Practical Philosophy (such as
ethics and political philosophy), encompassing a wide ranging expertise in the History of
Philosophy. A research focus on ethics (systematic and applied) and political philosophy or
intercultural philosophy is expected. The successful candidate will teach courses on ethics
(e.g., business ethics) and history of philosophy in the Philosophy Program, in the
interdisciplinary M.A. program „Culture of the Techno-scientific World“, and in the Post-
Graduate Studies‘ program.
Applicants need to demonstrate experience in academic teaching and need to be prepared to
commit themselves to interdisciplinary research with other Faculties of the University. The

languages in classical antiquity is expected.
During the first two years, courses can be taught in English. By the beginning of the third
year, the successful candidate is expected to have acquired German language proficiency in
order to teach in German and to participate in academic administration and interfacultary
