Post date: December 11, 2012
Visiting Professor in the Humanities
Deadline: January 13, 2013

Full-time, two-year, non-tenure track position beginning Fall 2103. The position's main responsibility is teaching undergraduate courses in both philosophy and literature. The position carries a 3/3 teaching load, with an additional requirement to perform internal divisional work and to develop initiatives to promote the humanities at Drury University and in surrounding communities. The successful candidate will possess a solid knowledge of philosophical theories in ethics and an ability to teach ethics through an analysis of literary works would be additionally desirable, as well as solid knowledge of the literature of an historical period between antiquity and the Enlightenment (specific time period and cultural context open.) An ability to focus pedagogically on the philosophical and literary dimensions of such works is highly desirable. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, and an earned doctorate in either philosophy or literature, with a significant background in the alternate discipline.

Drury's Humanities Division boasts a highly collegial, collaborative, and interdisciplinary culture. The Division has seven majors, including philosophy, literature, religion, writing, communication, foreign languages, and history.

The successful applicant's cover letter will address the above areas, as well as the position's specific teaching needs, including a) a general education freshman seminar in an open philosophical topic, b) multiple sections of ethics, required by the general education curriculum, some of which should focus on philosophical theory, and some of which can focus on literature, c) a lower division survey of literature course, and d) a cross-listed philosophy and literature upper divisional seminar course on a literary period (between antiquity and the Enlightenment), taught with both target audiences in mind. In subsequent years additional opportunities for teaching different cross-listed philosophy and literature upper divisional seminars are available.

Position remains open until filled. Review of applications will be January 13, 2013. To apply, email Philosophy/English Search Committee Chair at humsearch [__at__] drury [dot] edu and attach in one file (PDF or Word) the following: a cover letter highlighting interest and qualifications for the position, a complete and current curriculum vitae including evidence of teaching quality, and contact information of at least three references.

Graduate School of Ancient Philosophy / Humboldt Universität zu Berlin,
Berlin,
Germany
Post date: November 22, 2012
Doctoral fellowships and stipends for pre-doctoral studies
Deadline: January 15, 2013

Apply by 15 January 2013 for the

- Three-Year Doctoral Program in Ancient Philosophy,
- Or for pre-doctoral studies of one year.

The Graduate School of Ancient Philosophy (http://www.gsap.hu-berlin.de) at the Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin (http://www.hu-berlin.de) is pleased to offer up to four fellowships for doctoral studies in Ancient Philosophy and Science. Two of these fellowships are reserved for non-German applicants because they are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The fellowships cover the living costs at Berlin and are for full-time study only. There are no tuition fees, but there are low administrative fees amounting to ca. 250-300 Euros per semester (and cover free public transportation in Berlin).

Students may also apply for a funded pre-doctorial year of studies at the Graduate School. Typical candidates for this option are students who hold a BA in philosophy or classics (but not an MA) and want to take a PhD without first taking an MA (which is the typical path within the German system of higher education).

The Graduate School of Ancient Philosophy
The GSAP provides a structured doctoral program in ancient philosophy and science (in English and German). The three-year program leads to the doctoral degree in Philosophy or Classics. It includes colloquia, dissertation seminars, reading groups, international workshops, and intensive short courses. The program culminates in the writing of a doctoral dissertation (in English or German).

The School’s core faculty:
- Prof. Jonathan Beere
- Prof. Stephen Menn
- Prof. Philip van der Eijk
- Dr. Jacob Rosen
- Tim Wagner

The School is embedded in a lively community of scholars and institutions (like the Excellence Cluster Topoi) all devoted to ancient studies.

The international Ancient Philosophy & Science Network (APSN)
Students of the program are automatically part of the international Ancient Philosophy & Science Network (APSN) initiated by the Graduate School. The APSN involves collaboration with five international partner institutions in the field of ancient philosophy and science:

- University of Chicago (Philosophy and Classics)
- University of Leuven (Philosophy, De Wulf-Mansioncentre)
- Princeton University (Philosophy and Classics)
- University of Toronto (Philosophy and Classics)
- University of Cambridge (History and Philosophy of Science)

Applications
The closing date for applications for the fellowships is 15 January. The doctoral fellowships advertised here have no thematic restrictions. Interviews will be held at Berlin (presumably during the second last week of March 2013). Candidates from overseas will not need to travel to Berlin for an interview.
