The Chair of Philosophy, located at the Ragnar Nurkse School of Innovation and Governance, Faculty of Social Sciences, Tallinn University of Technology, welcomes applications for (A) one or more early career research positions (Post-Doctoral Researchers) and (B) one or more PhD Positions (Junior Researchers) in philosophy, beginning in 1 April 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter. The length of the appointment is two or three years. The required Area of Specialization is expected to be one of the following: Analytic Philosophy; Logic; History and Philosophy of Science and Technology; Philosophy of Social Sciences; Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Sciences. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Neuroscience

The Brain and Mind Institute and the Rotman Institute of Philosophy at Western University in London, Canada invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Neuroscience. The Fellowship will provide a new scholar in philosophy of neuroscience with a unique opportunity to pursue his or her chosen areas of scholarly research in collaboration with neuroscientists and philosophers.

Western's Brain and Mind Institute is a leading international center for cognitive neuroscience research (http://www.uwo.ca/its/brain/). Ongoing research seeks to understand the neural bases of mental abilities such as perception, memory, reasoning, attention, self-awareness, motor control, language, and consciousness. Faculty include six Canada Research Chair holders and the recipient of a Canada Excellence Research Chair.

The Rotman Institute of Philosophy is situated in one of Canada's leading departments of philosophy, and it brings together philosophers and scientists to work on problems of global significance (http://www.rotman.uwo.ca/). Rotman faculty include two Canada Research Chair holders, and ongoing research focuses on a variety of aspects of contemporary physics, biology, and medical science.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Neuroscience has a one-year term with the possibility of renewal for a second year, and the Fellow will be co-supervised by faculty from the Brain and Mind Institute and the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. The Fellow will be affiliated with a lab in the Brain and Mind Institute and will participate in a program of ongoing neuroscience research related to his or her own philosophical interests. The Fellow will have an office within the Rotman Institute in the Department of Philosophy, and will participate fully in the research life of the Institute, including participation in conferences, research groups, and reading groups. The Fellow is also expected to teach a half course in the Department of Philosophy.

Candidates must have had a PhD in Philosophy conferred within five years of the start of the Fellowship. All PhD requirements must be completed by the starting date of this Postdoctoral Fellowship, July 1, 2013. The stipend is $38,000 CDN plus $6,180 CDN for teaching a half course in the Department of Philosophy. Additionally, the Fellow will be provided a research allowance of $5,000 CDN. The Rotman Institute of Philosophy at The Western University in London, Ontario, Canada invites applicants for two separate Postdoctoral Fellowships in Philosophy and Science. Each fellowship is offered for one year with a possibility of renewal for a second year. The fellowships provide an opportunity for new scholars to pursue their chosen areas of scholarly research further in a research-intensive environment. For one fellowship, we seek a scholar working on general issues in philosophy of science, such as the status of laws, causation, and symmetries, in light of contemporary physics. For the second, we seek a scholar whose philosophical project engages the sciences, broadly construed – including philosophical research related to specific sciences, or research regarding the ethical and political dimensions of science. (Scholars working in Foundations of Physics and Philosophy of Neuroscience should apply to the fellowships offered in those areas.)

The successful candidate will show outstanding potential as a philosopher, will be enthusiastic and flexible in contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and will be keen to participate fully in the intellectual and academic activities of a department which prizes collegiality very highly. North Carolina State University seeks an established scholar to provide leadership for its interdisciplinary program in Science, Technology & Society (STS). The STS program provides crucial links among the University’s strengths in humanities, social science, science, technology, and engineering fields. The successful candidate will assume the directorship of the program and contribute to developing these connections further and integrating them more fully into the University’s identity. Job description

The postdoc will conduct research on historical and/or systematic aspects of infinite regresses in philosophy. The position is situated within the research project on infinite regresses in epistemology, funded by the Dutch National Science Foundation NWO. The project is carried out in the Department of Theoretical Philosophy. Head of the project is Prof. Jeanne Peijnenburg.

Profile

Candidates for this postdoc position:
• have a Ph.D. in philosophy or in another field that is demonstrably relevant;
• have a background in, or familiarity with, the regress problem in epistemology or in the history of philosophy;
• have an excellent command of English and are prepared to present their research results in English;
• are willing and able to teach a small number of courses.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary that is determined in accordance with the current scales as set out in the collective labor agreement for the Dutch universities (CAO) and has a range between € 3,195 and € 4,374 gross per month dependent on qualifications and experience. The position is temporary, with a maximum of three years (initial appointment of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year). A part-time appointment at 0.8 fte for four years is possible.
