The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Race. The appointment will be for 4.5 years. The positions will be filled as 100% Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in positions on salary scale TV-L 13. GRK 2073 “Integrating Ethics and Epistemology of Scientific Research” is a research training group that is established as a joint project by Leibniz University Hannover and Bielefeld University. It is funded by the German national funding agency (DFG). Its research program aims at bridging the gap between practice and theory in the philosophical investigation of scientific research in two ways: firstly, it examines new connections between practical philosophy of science (ethics of science, political philosophy of science) and theoretical philosophy of science (epistemology, metaphysics); secondly, it analyzes relevant links between the material culture of the sciences (objects, equipment, experiments, practices) and the cognitive dimension of the sciences (theories, hypotheses, discourses, models). The working language of GRK 2073 is English.

Applicants should be fluent in English and must hold a PhD in philosophy or HPS (or a similar program). They should have completed their doctoral research on a topic from philosophy of science and/or ethics of science. They need to specify a research project that fits into research program of GRK 2073 as described above.

The position will be associated with Professor Ladislav Kvasz’s ongoing research project “Formal epistemology – the future synthesis” funded by the Czech Academy of Sciences – see the attached project summary at

The position is open from January 2020 or later in the first half of 2020. The maximum duration of the appointment is three years (January 2020 – December 2022). The monthly salary range will be approximately 40.000 – 42.000 CZK (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A trial period of three months will be used when the position is first filled. This is a full-time employment – i.e., 40 hours per week.

The position will be devoted to the study of the epistemological approaches, methods, and techniques employed by physicists, such as for instance by Newton, Maxwell, Hamilton, Einstein, or Bohr, thus focusing on crucial historical breakthroughs in knowledge that are well understood from the historical point of view. The main question is how the actual scientific practice of gaining new knowledge in physics relates to the epistemological debates waged in philosophy.

We are looking for a candidate who holds a PhD degree in logic, epistemology, philosophy, or history of science or related disciplines (obtained after January 1, 2014) with a relevant research background, strong motivation for research, and competence to carry out both independent and collaborative research.

The Department of Philosophy at King’s University College at Western University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track appointment in Philosophy, beginning July 1, 2020. The area of specialization required for this appointment is Ethics broadly understood. While the area of competence is open, the department welcomes various approaches to contemporary ethical issues from a global, non-canonical, and cross-cultural perspective. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain an active research program and to develop and teach courses in Human Rights and Socio-political Ethics, Environmental Ethics, and Ethics of Technology, as well as advanced courses in Ethics.
