Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications and nominations for the Director of its newly created Center for Advanced Research in the Humanities. The Director, who would report directly to the Dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences, should be a humanities scholar with a strong and active research record commensurate with the rank of full professor. Demonstrated ability to secure external funds, to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies, to work strategically with a faculty executive committee, and to articulate the importance of the humanities to internal and external audiences are required. A well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise at VCU is required. The successful candidate will have experience in areas such as budgeting and allocation of resources into academic initiatives, personnel management, and strategic planning. The ability to create, articulate and implement a collaborative vision and future direction for the Center is essential. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU required.

The Manawatu Campus, where this position is located, has a rich research and teaching tradition in relation to the land, natural resources and the environment. Politics is a key social science programme within the School of People, Environment and Planning which has a presence on the Manawatu and Albany campuses.

The appointee will possess, or will have very nearly completed, a relevant doctorate and will have relevant research and teaching expertise in Politics. In particular, the appointee will have expertise in political theory or political philosophy and, ideally, in an applied research area that connects with the research strands of the Politics programme and/or the School of People, Environment and Planning more generally.

The appointee will develop and teach, both internally and extramurally, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and provide supervision at Masterate and PhD level. Teaching will primarily be conducted on the Palmerston North campus, and there is a strong distance education programme.
The successful applicant will contribute to the development of the Politics programme’s postgraduate offerings, to its research and publication profile, and to collegial relations within the programme and the School more broadly.

The PhD position is part of the larger LogiCIC project on "The Logical Structure of Correlated Information Change".  The overall project aims to develop a uniform logical system that centres around correlated information change and can be used to explain and model various interactive scenarios. The project is interdisciplinary in nature and will combine insights and techniques from a range of research domains, including logic, quantum mechanics, philosophy of science, belief revision theory, truth approximation and learning theory. In total two PhD students, one postdoctoral researcher and the principal investigator will participate in the LogiCIC project.

Candidates should have a Master's degree in Logic, Theoretical Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence or related areas. Fluent English is a prerequisite.

Fellows will conduct mentored empirical and theoretical research related to the ethics of health policy, human subject research, international research ethics, genetics, or other bioethical fields of interest. The Department of Philosophy at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University invites applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track position to begin August 2013. Regular teaching responsibilities will include courses in Ancient Philosophy and Medieval Philosophy as well as introductory courses in a variety of philosophical areas. All members of the Philosophy Department are also expected to teach regularly in the colleges' Common Curriculum, which includes a First Year Seminar course and an upper level Ethics Seminar required of all graduates. Both of these Common Curriculum elements offer opportunities for creativity in course design. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to help the Department fulfill its Common Curriculum commitments as well as its commitment to offer both Ancient and Medieval Philosophy regularly. Additional upper-level courses in Philosophy are also possible teaching assignments, depending on the candidate's philosophical interests. The department would also value enhancing its ability to contribute to interdisciplinary programs in Theology, Asian Studies (Indian Philosophy), Peace Studies, Environmental Studies, and Gender and Women's Studies. A strong commitment to the education of undergraduates, including promoting undergraduate research, is essential.
