The School of Divinity, History and Philosophy seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Philosophy with duties within the Northern Institute of Philosophy. For the first two years of the post the postholder will be seconded to the AHRC funded project The Metaphysical Basis of Logic: The Law of Non-Contradiction as Basic Knowledge (see NIP webpage http://www.abdn.ac.uk/philosophy/nip/page?id=64 for more details). For the duration of the project the postholder’s teaching commitments will be reduced to 30 hours per annum and s/he will be expected to actively support the project and the other project’s of the Institute. After the project ends in 2015 the postholder will be expected to dedicate 50% of her/his time to undertaking research within the Northern Institute of Philosophy and 50% to the administrative and teaching needs of the department of philosophy.

This post will involve a balanced commitment to both departmental and Institute activities aimed to enhance the quality and effectiveness of philosophical research and teaching at the University of Aberdeen at all levels. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the collaborative research activities of the Institute, both through supporting Institute activities and through his or her own research and research initiatives. In order to carry out research in the AHRC project, AOS in the area of Philosophy of Logic is required.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 7 scale (£37,382 - £44,607 per annum), with placement according to qualifications and experience.

The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time permanent position as Professor/Associate Professor in Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Department of Religion, Philosophy and History. The position is currently located at the Kristiansand Campus. The starting date is 1 August 2013 or upon agreement.

The Department of Religion, Philosophy and History has 42 academic staff members and approximately 500 students enrolled in study programmes in religion, philosophy and history. The department promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, and offers study programmes at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels as well as in the teacher education study programme.

The appointee will primarily be responsible for teaching and supervision in philosophy at the bachelor level. The appointee may also be assigned teaching and supervision duties at the master’s level and doctoral level in the PhD program called Religion, Ethics and Society. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the further development of the research activities in philosophy.

The departmental portfolio in philosophy comprises a one-year study programme in philosophy, as well as introductory courses called Examen philosophicum and Examen facultatum. The department is in the process of creating a bachelor degree study programme in philosophy. No final decision has been reached on this matter yet.

The appointee must have professorial competency in philosophy and/or a doctoral degree in philosophy or its equivalent. The appointee must have a high level of competence in philosophy and a documented expertise in contemporary philosophy of science and/or epistemology. It is desirable that the appointee have experience of research management. Emphasis will be placed on the appointee’s previous research activity, publications at the national and international level and participation in professional international networks.

Applicants are required to demonstrate their personal suitability for the position. Emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s willingness to participate in interdisciplinary collaboration and/or their experience of this type of collaboration. Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant’s professional and educational qualifications, collaborative abilities, independent initiative and ability to work in a systematic and goal-oriented manner. A high capacity for work and considerable flexibility are required for successful discharge of the responsibilties of the position.

The language of instruction and working language is Norwegian/or another Scandinavian language. Applicants who do not speak Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are expected to acquire the necessary proficiency to lecture in Norwegian. The University of Agder offers Norwegian language courses to international employees with little or no knowledge of Norwegian and facilitates participation in such courses. Permanently employed staff is expected to acquire good command of oral and written Norwegian within a period of two years. This is to be documented by passing the Bergen test with a score of 450 points.

It is desirable that the applicant has experience with and/or interest in the development and use of digital learning resources in their teaching.

The appointee must be able to participate in teaching, examination work and administration in the relevant subject areas according to current regulations. In accordance with responsibilities of the position and area of expertise, the appointee may also be assigned duties lying outside of the faculty/department with which the position is directly associated, for example in Continuing and Further Education.

Documentation of relevant practice-related pedagogic competency based on education or teaching/supervision is a requirement for the position. Should the appointee not possess such competency at the time of appointment, he/she must acquire this within a two-year period, for example through completing UiA’s course in university pedagogics. Possession of pedagogical qualifications beyond a basic level can give applicants a competitive advantage in a ranking of academically qualified applicants.

The Department of Philosophy II at Ruhr-University Bochum is seeking to hire a PhD student working in philosophical logic (50% TV-L E13 position, approx. 1300€/month). The position is associated with the chair of Logic and Epistemology (Prof. Heinrich Wansing) and comes with a mild teaching duty of one undergraduate class per semester. Residency in Bochum or in commutable distance is expected.

Candidates should have completed an excellent Master's thesis in philosophical logic and should have a decent background in the semantics and proof-theory of non-classical and modal logics. Moreover, candidates are supposed to have good communication skills in English. Good social skills are also required as cooperation with other researchers is expected.
