The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Ethics. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Philosophy or a closely related field, with a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference. Applicants must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and to the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, as demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Toronto has three campuses, St. George, Scarborough, and Mississauga, each with its own Department of Philosophy offering undergraduate programs. The advertised position is on the downtown St. George campus. The Graduate Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto is a tri-campus department, consisting of philosophy faculty appointed on all three campuses. Graduate teaching and supervision typically take place on the St. George campus.

Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream - Contractually Limited Term Appointment - Ethics and Computer Science

The Department of Philosophy and the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Toronto invite applications for a three-year contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in the area of Ethics and Computer Science instruction. Applicants must have earned a PhD in Philosophy or a closely related field by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will play a key part in the Embedded Ethics Education Initiative (E3I) (www.cs.toronto.edu/embedded-ethics/) in the Department of Computer Science and will teach courses on applied ethics in the Department of Philosophy. The E3I initiative aims to integrate ethical and technical considerations in computer science training right from the start by incorporating ethics modules into basic required Computer Science courses. Working with domain experts from Computer Science, the candidate will support the E3I initiative through the development and delivery of the ethics component of educational modules in Computer Science courses. Module development is done in close consultation with computer scientists, including members of the E3I leadership team. The candidate will also take a leadership role in investigating opportunities for E3I pedagogy to be adapted and employed in other departments within the university.

Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level in a degree-granting program, commensurate with experience, including lecture preparation and delivery of innovative course materials, activities, and assessments. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to pedagogical growth including participation and presentations at education conferences and workshops, publications, and pedagogical choices aligned with scholarship of teaching and learning literature and other scholarly work. Experience teaching large classes is considered an asset. Experience preparing and delivering educational content on ethical issues in computer science is an asset. We seek candidates whose teaching and research complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths in Philosophy (www.philosophy.utoronto.ca) and Computer Science (http://web.cs.toronto.edu).

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
