HOWARD UNIVERSITY WASHINGTON, DC. The Department of Philosophy is searching for a department chair to begin in Fall 2018. Howard University, classified as a doctoral/research institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is a comprehensive research university and a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). It is a residential campus of more than 10,000 students located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.
The Department of Philosophy offers a B.A. in Philosophy and consists of 7 faculty members and 1 staff member. We are looking for an experienced administrator and committed scholar to build on the existing strengths of the department and to facilitate the department’s participation in several interdisciplinary degree programs. We have needs in the areas of 20th century continental philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and epistemology, but distinguished applicants in other areas of philosophy are also welcome. We are a pluralistic department with special strengths in Africana philosophy, philosophy of law, normative ethics, and bioethics. Applicants must have a strong record of research, teaching, and professional service commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor and evidence of effective communication and organizational skills. Job description: The successful candidate will teach various courses at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels at the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences. The teaching commitment amounts to 7 periods of 45 minutes per week each semester. She/he will conduct high-level international research in philosophy and supervise Master’s and PhD theses.
Requirements: Applicants must hold a doctorate in philosophy and have strong teaching skills. Courses will be taught in French. Non-French speakers are expected to teach in French after a two-year period.
Institute: The professor will belong to the Institute of Philosophy at the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences.
Administration: Participation to the administration of the Institute of Philosophy, of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences and to others tasks at the level of the faculty.
Assistant: A full-time assistant can be hired by the successful candidate.
Secretary: Access to secretary services.
Appointment: The successful candidate is initially appointed for a period of four years, which may eventually be extended by two years. After this time, the confirmation of the nomination for an indeterminate time can be obtained on the basis of an evaluation. The full professor is further subjected to an evaluation procedure every six years during his career.

The Department is seeking applicants with outstanding research profile in Ethics and Critical Thinking. Applicants should have the ability to teach in these areas—both large introductory units of study and more specialised higher-level units—and to supervise Honours, Masters and PhD students in their fields of speciality. The appointees will also be expected to participate in the curriculum transformation currently underway at the University and to be willing to teach into interdisciplinary units.
