The successful candidate will conduct philosophical and interdisciplinary research and teaching
(including doctoral supervision) in the areas of Philosophy of Cognitive Science, and Philosophy of
Mind and Language. She or he will have a PhD and publications commensurate with their stage in
career, and should demonstrate potential for attracting external funding. The successful candidate
will have a strong background in Philosophy, and in Cognitive Science, and will show a proven
track record of teaching and research that crosses the borders between Philosophy, Psychology,
and Linguistics.
University of Edinburgh: Teaching Fellow in Mind and Embodied Cognition
Applications are invited for a full-time 2-year fixed-term Teaching Fellowship in the area of Mind
and Embodied Cognition. This post has been created to support teaching and graduate supervision
during a period of research leave granted to Professor Andy Clark. The successful candidate will
have a PhD and publications commensurate with their stage in career. She or he will deliver
philosophical and interdisciplinary teaching (including helping with graduate supervision) in the
areas of Embodied Cognition and Philosophy of Mind. The successful candidate will also contribute
teaching to the masters level specialization in Mind, Language and Embodied Cognition. Teaching
skills in the area of consciousness studies and/or philosophy of perception would be considered
an advantage.

Postdoc position (1,0 fte, 2 years)at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands on “Renaissance Humanism and the History of Philosophy”.
The Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, seeks a postdoc, already in the possession of a PhD degree, for the Research Programme “Humanists as Philosophers: The Place of Renaissance Humanism in the History of Thought”, led by Professor Lodi Nauta and funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
The text of the programme can be obtained by sending an email to Mrs Fré Moorrees (F [dot] C [dot] Moorrees [__at__] rug [dot] nl). The applicant can work on one of the themes delineated in the programme or on another theme as long as it ties in firmly with the main objectives of the programme. In either case, one is requested to write a research proposal. He/she is expected to write scholarly articles or a monograph, and will be asked to do some teaching.
Founded in 1614, the University of Groningen is the second-oldest university in the Netherlands. Its Faculty of Philosophy has an excellent reputation both in teaching and research, and occupies a top position in national rankings. It offers a lively and friendly intellectual community of about 50 teachers and researchers, and ca. 350 full-time students. A number of researchers come from abroad. The History of Philosophy department covers the entire history of philosophy from classical Antiquity to contemporary trends.
The University Library in Groningen is a good research library, while the other main university libraries in the Netherlands are reachable in 2-3 hours by train.
Requirements
- a finished dissertation on a topic closely related to the research programme.
- working knowledge of Latin as well as of the main modern languages. Knowledge of Dutch is no prerequisite.
- excellent scholarly record
- preferably, some teaching experience in the history of philosophy

The Philosophy (Metaphysics and History of Philosophy) chair is dedicated to
teaching and research in the broad domain of Philosophy.
The teaching tasks focus mainly on the Philosophy Bachelor’s and Master’s
programme and the Philosophy Research Master’s programme. A number of minors
and electives are likewise offered (to see the curriculum, please refer to
the UvA’s digital Course Catalogue: www.studiegids.uva.nl). The Faculty’s
Bachelor’s programmes are taught within the College of Humanities; the
Master’s and doctorate programmes are administered within the Graduate
School for Humanities.
The research tasks focus on the study of Philosophy, especially metaphysics
and the history of philosophy, and are carried out within either the
Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) or the Institute of Culture
and History (ICH).
The Faculty has chosen three research priority areas for the 2009-2012
period: Cultural Heritage and Identities; Cultural Transformations and
Globalisation; Cognitive Modelling & Learning (interfaculty area).
Requirements
The new professor of Philosophy (Metaphysics and History of Philosophy) has
thorough knowledge of the field, as evidenced by his or her academic
background, publications and teaching history. S/he holds a doctoral degree
in this or a related discipline and has a good understanding of the domain
as a whole. S/he is an expert in classical metaphysical philosophy and is
well-versed in the history of philosophy.

Appointment
The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of no more
than two years. Subject to satisfactory performance, this will be followed
by a permanent appointment. The gross salary will normally conform to
professorial scale 2 (between €4904 and €7142 per month on a full-time basis
in accordance with the salary scale established in January 2009). In certain
cases, however, different terms of employment may be offered.

1. Post-Doctoral Fellowships
The Leo Apostel Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies offers post-doctoral fellowships, employment for three years, and the possibility for prolongation for an additional three years. Candidates need to have a doctorate degree. The research engages in one of the aspects of the overall scientific activities of the Leo Apostel Centre. Because of the broad scope of the research at the Leo Apostel Centre, candidates with a variety of types of scientific background are welcome, from mathematics and physics, computer science, biology and engineering, to psychology, cognitive science, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, economics, complex systems and others. More specifically CLEA is interested in candidates motivated to investigate the foundations of one of the scientific disciplines. Hence, foundations of biology, including evolution theory, and question with respect to the nature and origin of life, foundations of mathematics and physics, with special interest for relativity theory and quantum mechanics, foundations of cognition, with special interest for concept theories, decision theories, theories of meaning, foundations of computer science, with special interest for artificial intelligence, semantic analysis theories, and basics of information retrieval, foundations of economics, with special interest in behavioral economics, and fundamental theories of risk and probability, foundations of sociology and anthropology, with special interest for theories of cultural evolution, aspects of science and culture, aspects of constructivism, and world views research, and philosophy, with special interest for philosophy of science, philosophy of meaning and meaningfulness. 4. How to Apply

The candidate needs to add a curriculum vitae or a link to a website where his or her curriculum vitae is sufficiently presented. The curriculum vitae also has to include the exact date the PhD was obtained (or the date the PhD is going to be obtained, if this is earlier than June 1, 2011, applications for a post-doc are welcome), and additionally (a) a detailed list of publications (ordered chronologically, for publications in ISI-journals the impact factor needs to be indicated), (b) a list of attended conferences, and (c) any other item of scientific value. The application may also contain a short text where the candidate explains his or her specific interest in working at the Leo Apostel Centre, and any material that the candidate himself or herself decides to be of importance for his or her candidature. This does NOT include a scan of diplomas or proofs of having passed tests such as TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language). Hence in this first stage of the call, there is no reason why an application e-mail including attachments should exceed the 1MB limit.
For candidates applying for a doctoral scholarship, a description of the studies that have been undertaken has to be included. The successful candidate will stand out in central fields of Practical Philosophy (such as moral philosophy, political philosophy or philosophy of action).
