Deadline: June 5, 2016

Leibniz Universität Hannover and Bielefeld University jointly seek to fill

4 Doctoral Candidate Positions (65% TV-L 13)
in Philosophy of Science and/or Ethics of Science

starting October 1st, 2016, within the Graduiertenkolleg (research training group) GRK 2073 “Integrating Ethics and Epistemology of Scientific Research”.

Appointment will be for three years. The positions will be filled as 65% Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter positions on salary scale TV-L 13. (This amounts to a monthly net salary roughly between 1460 and 1580 €, plus benefits such as health insurance.) Two of the positions are expected to be located at Leibniz Universität Hannover and the other two at Bielefeld University.

GRK 2073 “Integrating Ethics and Epistemology of Scientific Research” is a research training group that is established as a joint project by Leibniz Universität Hannover and Bielefeld University. It is funded by the German national funding agency (DFG). Its research program aims at bridging the gap between theory and practice in philosophy of science in two ways: firstly, it examines new connections between theoretical philosophy of science (epistemology, metaphysics) and practical philosophy of science (ethics of science, political philosophy of science); secondly, it analyses relevant links between the cognitive dimension of the sciences (theories, hypotheses, discourses, models) and the material culture of the sciences (objects, equipment, experiments, practices). The working language of GRK 2073 is English.

Applicants must be fluent in English and should be able to demonstrate an interest in philosophy of science, broadly construed to include also ethics and political philosophy of science. They should hold a pertinent university degree (typically an MA degree in Philosophy or HPS) and must be eligible to enroll as doctoral students in Philosophy at Leibniz Universität Hannover or Bielefeld University. They need to specify a dissertation project that fits the aims of the research program of GRK 2073 as described above.

The obligations of each holder of one of the advertised positions will be to conduct research on a dissertation project that contributes to the research program of GRK 2073 and to participate in the training activities that are specified by the qualification program. Holders of the positions must enroll as doctoral students in philosophy at Leibniz Universität Hannover or Bielefeld University. It is expected that they take residence in the region of their respective campus.

Applications should be sent by e-mail to admissions [__at__] philos [dot] uni-hannover [dot] de and must be received by June 5th, 2016. Please consult our application guide for further information on how to apply (as well as on the research training group and the positions offered): http://grk2073.org/apply

For informal enquiries please contact Rafael Ugarte Chacón (rafael [dot] ugarte [dot] chacon [__at__] philos [dot] uni-hannover [dot] de).

Severely disabled applicants will be given preferential consideration in the event of equal qualification.

A researcher position (graduate or postdoc level) is available in the project „INTERFACES“, an international research consortium on ethical, legal, and social aspects of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), coordinated by the team in Munich. The subproject to be carried out in Munich and funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will involve conceptual philosophical analyses and empirical studies using methods from social science.

Candidates with disabilities with equivalent qualifications will be given preference. Please send your application (cover letter, CV, 1-3 relevant writing samples) electronically as a single pdf file and with the subject matter “EN-INTERFACE-PHIL” by April 1, 2016, to the project leader Ralf J. St Paul's School,
London,
United Kingdom
Post date: March 7, 2016
Teacher of Philosophy
Deadline: March 16, 2016

Commencing Autumn 2016
General
St Paul's is a selective independent boys’ school with about 940 pupils in the age range 13 to 18, of whom up to 35 are boarders. The School (which includes around 440 Juniors aged 7 to 13 years) occupies a superb 45 acre site on the south bank of the Thames, west of Hammersmith Bridge. St Paul’s excels academically at both A level and GCSE, with some of the highest national scores, but it is the work beyond the curriculum that excites both students and teachers alike. Teaching takes place within an eight period day, five days a week.

The Theology and Philosophy Department
This is an outstanding opportunity to join the vibrant and dynamic Theology and Philosophy Department of one of the country’s most academic independent schools. Enthusiasm for philosophy in the school is running high and is increasing year on year. Growth in the number of students opting for our subjects has necessitated the appointment of another full-time teacher to join our ambitious and popular department.

The successful candidate will show excellent ability to teach the philosophy papers on the Pre-U Philosophy and Theology syllabus, the capacity to teach the Edexcel iGCSE in Religious Studies, the ability to contribute to our internally-written schemes of work in Moral Philosophy for years 9 and 10, and the potential to help raise further the profile of philosophy within the school by enthusing pupils with a love of the subject, and by expanding our super-curricular programme.

Teaching in our department is discursive, class sizes are very small, and pupils are extremely bright and engaged. The post would be suitable for those with wholly academic backgrounds as well as for those with backgrounds in secondary education.

Some 30 boys will start Pre-U Philosophy and Theology next September, 25 at GCSE. Our examination results are consistently extremely impressive, and our university entrance statistics are outstanding.

We provide an exceptional range of super-curricular opportunities for our students, including a programme of very well-attended lectures by internationally recognised academics, several student-run philosophy societies, and mentoring for student-led research. We also take full advantage of the public opportunities for philosophy on offer at the Aristotelian Society, the Institute of Philosophy, and London’s universities. We have recently hosted talks by, among many others, Tim Crane, David Papineau, Hallvard Lillehammer, A.C. Grayling, John Cottingham and Jonathan Dancy. We count Isaiah Berlin and Benjamin Jowett amongst our alumni.

Each year, many of our pupils apply to university to read courses involving philosophy, and a course of research-led undergraduate-style seminars is offered annually in preparation for this.

Additional Information
Selection will be made on an equal opportunities basis. Members of staff, once established, are normally expected to become tutors and take on pastoral responsibility for up to 15 boys across the age-range.

We offer salaries significantly above the National Scale, a subsidised accommodation scheme, and a highly discounted education for the children of staff, subject to competitive entry.

Application Form
Further details and an application form can be obtained from the School’s website www.stpaulsschool.org.uk via the ‘Careers’ tab in the footer. Applications should be sent via email, to hmsec [__at__] stpaulsschool [dot] org [dot] uk and the closing deadline for all applications is Wednesday 16th March 2016. Interviews will take place on Monday 21st March 2016. Please feel free to contact the Head of Theology and Philosophy, Dr. Rufus Duits rad [__at__] stpaulsschool [dot] org [dot] uk, if you would like to discuss any aspect of the post.

Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC),
Berlin,
Germany
Post date: November 2, 2015
Post-doc position ethics or political philosophy of natural resource management
Deadline: December 15, 2015

Post-doc Position in Philosophical Ethics of Natural Resource Management

MCC's Working Group “Scientific Assessments, Ethics, and Public Policy” (SEP) offers a Post-doc position (2016 – 2018) to foster the philosophical-ethical reflection on the (property) rights over and management of natural resources, in particular regarding land and forests in the context of global climate change. The successful candidate is expected to contribute prominently to the scientific output of the group, mostly in terms of peer-reviewed publications. Research questions may include, for example, whether these natural resources should be regarded as (global) commons and what this would more precisely imply for their appropriate management from a social welfare perspective.

Within a few years the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) in Berlin has already established itself prominently in the climate policy research landscape, ranked as No. 2 of climate think tanks worldwide. MCC follows a unique research agenda that focusses on assessing the opportunities and risks of policy pathways regarding global commons, and their implications for sustainable development. MCC's research is driven by policy relevance and is largely interdisciplinary in nature. MCC is a joint initiative of the Mercator Foundation and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). Cooperation with high-profile international partner organizations provides a network of excellence.

Inspired inter alia by John Dewey’s philosophy, the working group SEP examines design options for integrated scientific assessment-making in the context of public policy processes, and in particular how ethical aspects and conflicting stakes can be treated appropriately in these assessments in the case of highly complex, disputed policy issues, such as, for instance, land use and forest management.

Required background and qualification

• Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in philosophy (or be close to completion at the time of application) and should particularly be trained in interdisciplinary-ethical argumentation or political philosophy.
• A background in economics and/or public policy analysis would be an additional asset, but is not obligatory;
• The successful candidate is expected to conduct high-quality research publishable in reputable peer-reviewed journals, and is expected to seriously take an interest in public policy, particularly the management of natural resources such as forests and land;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
• Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary research team, to conceptualize a broad and ambitious research agenda, to plan and execute specific research projects; to meet task deadlines and goals; and to conduct research independently and publish results in peer-reviewed academic journals;
• Contributions to enhancing the research profile of the working group; potentially taking over responsibilities of supervising PhD student (depending on funding, however); potentially contributing to acquire third-party funding.

Applications

The institute's management and staff alike are committed to a working environment that promotes equality, diversity, and tolerance. Salary for the position is according to the German TV-L (E14, fulltime-position). The contract duration would be 3 years with extension depending on funding. The envisaged starting date is 01 January 2016. The position will remain open until filled.
