Professorship in Medieval Philosophy and the Early Modern Scholastic Tradition

From its foundation, the Institute of Philosophy has a long standing tradition of research and teaching in the medieval scholastic tradition, with an emphasis on Thomas Aquinas. To continue this tradition, the Institute of Philosophy announces a full-time academic position dedicated to teaching and conducting research in medieval philosophy and in the continuation of the scholastic tradition in early modernity.

Requirements:
The candidate has a Doctorate in Philosophy.
S/he is capable of conducting scientific research and of teaching in the field of medieval philosophy.
More specifically, the candidate
1.is familiar with the standard authors and works of the medieval scholastic tradition and its early modern continuation;
2. is thoroughly acquainted with the major themes, questions, and controversies in the period involved;
3. studies texts from this period in their original language;
4. is capable of relevantly incorporating the history of philosophy into contemporary philosophical debates.

The candidate is expected to contribute to the research activities of the De Wulf-Mansion Centre for Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy. S/he must be prepared to teach courses and seminars, both in Dutch and English, to both graduate and undergraduate students of the Institute of Philosophy and of other faculties of the K.U. Leuven.

Candidates who do not have Dutch are expected to master the language with fluency within a three-year period in order to be able to teach in Dutch as well.

The candidate will be appointed at a rank corresponding to her/his experience and achievements both in research and teaching. The appointment starts on October 1, 2010.

2 Junior Researchers (PhD positions) on Renaissance Humanism and the History of Philosophy

The Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, seeks 2 junior researchers for the research programme “Humanists as Philosophers: The Place of Renaissance Humanism in the History of Thought”, led by Professor Lodi Nauta and funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

The text of the programme can be obtained by sending an email to Mrs Fré Moorrees (F [dot] C [dot] Moorrees [__at__] rug [dot] nl). It consists of 6 well-delineated research projects. The applicant can work on one of these projects but can also submit his/her own research proposal as long as it ties in with the main objectives of the programme.

Founded in 1614, the University of Groningen is the second-oldest university in the Netherlands. Its Faculty of Philosophy has an excellent reputation both in teaching and research, and occupies a top position in national rankings. It offers a lively and friendly intellectual community of about 45 teachers and researchers, and ca. 350 full-time students. A number of researchers come from abroad. The History of Philosophy department covers the entire history of philosophy from classical Antiquity to contemporary trends.
The University Library in Groningen is a good research library, while the other main university libraries in the Netherlands are reachable in 2-3 hours by train.

PhD
- PhD-positions are for four years on a full-time basis (contract for 1 year, with an extension of 3 years after a positive evaluation). The PhD will write a doctoral dissertation and may be asked to do some teaching.
- Applicants should possess an MA (or equivalent) in the history of philosophy, (intellectual) history, or classics/literature. Candidates with an MA from adjacent fields relevant to the programme are also encouraged to respond.
- Knowledge of Dutch is no prerequisite.

The Bertha Ottenstein Professorship is an initiative to support promising female researchers. The position is based on a temporary appointment with tenure-track option. It is funded by means of the German Excellence Initiative.
The successful candidate will lead a research group and conduct research on “Grammar – Logic – Rhetoric: Conceptions of Language at the Crossroads of Scientific Disciplines and Social Groups in Arabic-Islamic Culture (800-1100)” which has been granted a strategic position within the Faculty of Philosophy. Duties include research, teaching, thesis supervision, and service to the Faculty. Applications of highly qualified female researchers are particularly welcome. Lectureship in Jewish philosophy (2 hours of teaching, 3 years: renewable)
The requirements are possession of a doctorate or of an equivalent title, a solid experience of academic research and teaching in the field and a record of international publications.
The successful candidate will give a teaching in the history of Jewish thought, focusing, depending on his or her specialisation, on the history of this tradition of thought or on its contemporary aspects. PhD position in early modern philosophy/science

One PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences and the Centre for History of Science (www.sarton.ugent.be) at Ghent University, on the research project “Experiment and observation in seventeenth-century meteorology and natural philosophy. A comparative study of Descartes's Météores and Fromondus's Meteorologicorum Libri Sex” funded by the Science Foundation Flanders, and led by Maarten Van Dyck and Sven Dupré.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in philosophy and/or history, and a proven interest in history of philosophy and/or science, with excellent reading knowledge of Latin, fluency in English, and preferably, reading knowledge of French. S/he is expected to work on the topics identified in the project (respectively “the role of observations and experiments in the generation of new knowledge” and “the natural philosophical status of meteorological phenomena”), and to publish in international specialist journals. Lincoln College and the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, propose to make a joint appointment in Philosophy from 1 October 2010. The postholder will be a Tutorial Fellow of Lincoln College and a University Lecturer (CUF) in the Faculty of Philosophy.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide undergraduate tuition for Lincoln College on a range of Philosophy subjects at both introductory and advanced level. The Faculty currently has urgent teaching needs in political philosophy and it is expected that the successful candidate will be able to teach in this area at graduate as well as undergraduate level. The Faculty also has teaching needs in the areas of aesthetics, philosophy of social science, and Kant, and would welcome applications from candidates able to teach in one or more of these areas, in addition to political philosophy.
