2 PhD positions in political philosophy vacant
March 17, 2011

2 Research Fellows in Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, Department of Philosophy, University of Tromsø, Norway.

The University of Tromsø has 2 research fellow positions in Philosophy vacant for applicants who would like to complete a PhD degree.

The period of appointment is 4 years.

Annual salary starts at level 48 on the Norwegian Government salary scale. Currently 383.700 NOK per year (approx. 49.000 EUR/66.000 USD per year).

The positions form part of the research project "Democracy and Justice: Challenges for Liberalism in a Pluralistic and Globalized World."

This research project focuses on the following thematic issues:

1. Conceptualizations of liberalism:
One might question whether liberalism as a political philosophy is based on presuppositions that are no longer present. Consequently, we might ask whether we need to reconstruct, reinterpret or simply reject (some of) the classical liberal values and principles. Another pressing question is whether liberal positions have the resources to adequately handle issues concerning power, recognition, rights and the distribution of economic and material resources on a global scale.

2. Democratic deliberation, inclusion and public reason:
This theme involves debates over the limits of publicly acceptable or relevant arguments, and issues concerning the possibility of ensuring equal opportunities for democratic deliberation. The questions to be addressed include the following: How can equality and liberty be secured for all involved parties in a world marked by widespread cultural and religious oppositions? To what degree is it possible and reasonable to include cultural and religious arguments in democratic deliberation?

3. Global justice and democracy:
Increasingly, political philosophers tend to approach the global context of justice not only as a question of distribution but also in light of asymmetric power structures. A consequence of globalization is that persons and groups without opportunities for consent are included in the plans and systems of global actors and institutions. Crucial issues include the following: Who can demand justice and who is responsible for ensuring that these demands are fulfilled? How do we create a political community where all citizens have the possibility of challenging and changing global institutions? How might the growing number of people devoid of civil liberties, including illegal refugees and immigrants, become members of such a community?

Submitted projects must address at least one of these three general topics.
