The Department of Philosophy at Texas State University invites applications for two Tenure-Track Assistant professorships to start in the Fall 2016 semester. AOS: One or more of: Applied Philosophy; Experimental Philosophy; Cognitive Science & Moral Psychology; Ethics of Science and Technology; Bioethics; Research Ethics; Africana Thought; or Philosophy of Culture. AOC: One or more of: History of Philosophy; Ethics; Philosophy of Language; Logic; Metaphysics; or Aesthetics.

Typical teaching load is 3/3, with a 2/2 assigned for the first year. Some teaching may be in evening courses. The department teaches two courses that meet a General Education Core Curriculum requirement to over 4,000 students each long semester, offers a BA in Philosophy, a MA in Applied Philosophy and Ethics, and minors in Philosophy, Value Studies, and Religion. Class size for most 1000-level course sections is 50. The department also offers these courses in large lecture sections (with required weekly discussion groups and a team of Graduate Instructional Assistants).

Other course assignments will be based on expertise and departmental need, possibly including doctoral-level Responsible Conduct of Research/Research Ethics. There are expectations of service to the department, college, university, and profession. We strongly support cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Successful candidates will be expected to be effective teachers and committed to teaching lower level philosophy courses as part of a core curriculum. PhD in Philosophy required by the time of appointment. ABD candidates please provide a letter from your committee chair verifying your anticipated completion before August 2016. Experience teaching Introduction to Philosophy or Moral Problems courses, and an active research program are strongly preferred.

The Department: The Department of Philosophy at Texas State University grants the BA in Philosophy, the MA in Applied Philosophy and Ethics, and offers undergraduate minors in Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Value Studies, as well as a graduate certificate in Professional Ethics. The Department has 35 full-time faculty members in Fall 2015, and teaches the largest number of undergraduates of any public university in Texas, over 5000 in Fall 2015. Members of the department have received funding from NEH or NSF in each of the past three years. Departmental activities include the Philosophy Dialogues, a program of ~50 events each semester including lectures, films, and discussions; an active chapter of Phi Sigma Tau; an annual student symposium; an annual alumni banquet; two student journals; an Ethics Bowl team, and an International Business Ethics Case Competition team.
