Tenure-Track Position in Theoretical Philosophy
(philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophical logic, as well as historical studies pertaining to these topics)

The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences at the University of Salzburg seeks applications for a tenure-track position in theoretical philosophy. The appointment will be made within the Austrian A2 salary scheme, initial salary being at least 56,485 Euro per year. The starting date is 1 October 2014.

The Department of Philosophy in Salzburg takes an analytic and interdisciplinary approach to philosophy. The theoretical philosophy unit will be led by Professor Christopher Gauker (presently at the University of Cincinnati). Charlotte Werndl (presently at the London School of Economics) has been appointed to the professorship for logic and philosophy of science. A third professor is expected to be appointed within the next few years. In affiliation with each of these positions, the department expects to add a tenure-track assistant professorship as well as a post-doctoral fellowship. The appointee will join a newly vibrant department. There will be invited speakers, longer-term visitors, conferences, and workshops.

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in philosophy by the start of the appointment. Interdisciplinary inclinations, publications in leading journals, and activity in the international philosophical community will be advantageous. The primary responsibilities of the appointee will be research and teaching in theoretical philosophy (philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophical logic, as well as historical studies pertaining to these topics). The initial teaching load is four hours per semester before tenure and eight hours after tenure. The appointee will also be expected to supervise Ph.D. and Masters students, to initiate research projects and to assist in administration.

The appointment is initially for six years. After between four and six years, the appointee will undergo a tenure review and, if successful, will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor. (Professionally more advanced appointees may be considered for tenure even earlier.) Expectations for tenure will be agreed to informally prior to appointment and will be contractually agreed to immediately after the start of employment. For candidates coming from educational systems where a habilitation is normal, the completion of a habilitation within four years will be one of the normal expectations. Other arrangements can be requested.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Fluency in German is not mandatory at the time of application. However, the appointee will be expected to teach in German from the third year of the appointment onwards, and therefore prior familiarity with the German language will be an advantage. Masters and Ph.D. courses can be taught in English, but undergraduate courses are usually taught in German.

The application should include a cover letter addressing the applicant’s academic background and research interests, a CV, a list of publications, a research plan, writing samples totaling no more than 20,000 words, a list of courses taught and evidence of teaching effectiveness (syllabi, teaching statement, summary course evaluations if available; no more than 20 pages). Letters of recommendation should not be sent. On-line interviews are expected to take place in March 2014.
