TV-L E13 50%

The project
A researcher position (graduate or postdoc level) is available in the project „INTERFACES“, an international research consortium on ethical, legal, and social aspects of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), coordinated by the team in Munich. The subproject to be carried out in Munich and funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will involve conceptual philosophical analyses and empirical studies using methods from social science.

Your tasks
The primary task will be to apply core concepts of philosophical action theory to the field of BCI. The philosophical analysis will be conducted in close cooperation with the legal subproject in Hamburg (C. Bublitz) and in exchange with the international partners in Canada (E. Racine) and Spain (D. Rodriguez-Arías). In addition, the post involves tasks in the coordination of the international research consortium (e.g. organization of workshops and publications).

Your profile
Candidates should have graduated in a relevant academic discipline (preferably philosophy) and have prior knowledge on action theory, neurophilosophy or ethics. An additional asset is a demonstrated interest in neuroscience (esp. brain interventions) as well as competencies in organization and administration. Scientific ambition, strong analytical skills, and the capacity to work in a team are major requirements. Spoken and written fluency in English is essential (while knowledge of German is an advantage).

Our offer
We offer an exciting research experience in an innovative project at the intersection of neuroscience, philosophy, social science and law, regarding a relevant question of society. The post holder will work in an interdisciplinary team at the Institute of Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine in Munich (http://www.en.egt.med.uni-muenchen.de), in the context of one of the most prestigious universities in Germany and in exchange with partners in Canada, Spain and Germany (Hamburg). The salary will be according to TV-L E13 (50%). The post is initially limited to 12 months, but an extension may be possible. A top-up of the position by obtaining additional third-party funds would be desired and supported by us. Residency requirements can be discussed on an individual basis.

Applications of women are especially invited; in the case of similar qualifications, competence and specific achievements, women will be considered on preferential terms, within the framework of the legal possibilities.
