Job Description:

The Foundational Research Institute ( http://foundational-research.org/ ) is a new nonprofit research organization devoted to reducing suffering in humanity’s future. We combine insights from artificial intelligence, technology, anthropic reasoning, international relations, sociology, public policy, ethics, animal welfare, and many other disciplines.

We’re looking for a research fellow or intern who will explore one or more of our topics of focus -- drawing connections between academic insights and their implications for altruism and reducing suffering. Here is a list of sample topics that we find important: http://foundational-research.org/open-research-questions/ We expect the research fellow/intern to publish in suitable venues, which may include academic journals, popular media websites, and/or on our organization’s own website.

The research fellow/intern should be self-directed and pursue topics mostly on his/her own, from idea generation through publication. Prior experience publishing papers is a plus.

The position is open to start at any time, depending on when we find a suitable candidate. While we are based in Basel, Switzerland and Albany, New York, USA, there is no requirement on location or working schedule; you may work from home and meet with us remotely online. Compensation will be comparable with that of other start-up nonprofit organizations.

If interested, please briefly tell us about yourself, why you’re interested in us, and what topics you would like to pursue.
