Job Description:

The Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague is seeking to appoint

The position will be associated with Professor Ladislav Kvasz’s ongoing research project “Formal epistemology – the future synthesis” funded by the Czech Academy of Sciences – see the attached project summary at
http://www.flu.cas.cz/images/dokumenty/verejne/vyberova_rizeni/ProjectDe...

The position is open from January 2020 or later in the first half of 2020. The maximum duration of the appointment is three years (January 2020 – December 2022). The monthly salary range will be approximately 40.000 – 42.000 CZK (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A trial period of three months will be used when the position is first filled. This is a full-time employment – i.e., 40 hours per week.

The position will be devoted to the study of the epistemological approaches, methods, and techniques employed by physicists, such as for instance by Newton, Maxwell, Hamilton, Einstein, or Bohr, thus focusing on crucial historical breakthroughs in knowledge that are well understood from the historical point of view. The main question is how the actual scientific practice of gaining new knowledge in physics relates to the epistemological debates waged in philosophy.

We are looking for a candidate who holds a PhD degree in logic, epistemology, philosophy, or history of science or related disciplines (obtained after January 1, 2014) with a relevant research background, strong motivation for research, and competence to carry out both independent and collaborative research.
