Postdoc in the project "(Re)Examining Modeling"
The modern world increasingly relies on mathematical models, but the number of people who build and understand these models is incredibly small. It is therefore reasonable to ask whether we can and should trust these models and those who develop them. This project will examine the ethics and power structures of modelling. More importantly, it seeks to explore how the general public can be empowered to critically discuss modelling methods and assumptions without requiring full understanding the mathematical intricacies of the models. The work will involve a deep, critical questioning of practices in mathematical modelling, exploration of the ways in which mathematical models produce insights, discussion of modelling to shape debates and formulation of best practices.
Key questions include:
- How do models produce insights?
- How is the power of modelling used?
- How can models be understood, questioned, and criticized by the public?
You’ll be working with an interdisciplinary team of experts that includes, among others, Rossella Alba (Social Science, Science, Technology Studies and Human Geography), Mark Siebel (Philosophy) and Thilo Gross (Mathematical Modelling).
Requirements include:
- PhD in a relevant subject (e.g., philosophy, Science and Technology Studies)
- Interest in philosophy of mathematical modelling
- Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research
- Very good English knowledge (approximately equivalent to CEFR level C1)
