The Department of Media and Communications Science of the Faculty of Humanities at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt hereby advertises a

Full Professorship in Visual Culture

(initially only temporary for five years) according to §98 UG, starting with September 1, 2016.

At about 10,000 students, Klagenfurt University is a young, lively and innovative university at the intersection of Alpine and Mediterranean cultures – in a region famous for its quality of life. As a national public university (§6 UG) it is fully funded by federal means, and its mission statement is founded on the principle of “transcending boundaries!”.

The newly established Professorship for Visual Culture is to represent this interdisciplinary field of research within the School and beyond, and to deepen it in exchange and collaboration with members of the School that are already doing research in this area. The Professor’s activity is to promote and develop the research in Visual Culture at Klagenfurt University. A person of excellent qualifications and international scientific renown is required, able to represent the topic in research and teaching with great commitment, to successfully establish co-operations, and to pursue a demanding and forward-looking research programme.

The duties of the Professorship include:
• Representation of the thematic focus on Visual Culture in research and teaching.
• Coordination and distinctive development of the transdisciplinary research cluster on Visual Culture.
• Counselling and supervision of thematically appropriate student projects from various programmes.
• Coordination of and collaboration on the development of a Master’s programme in Visual Culture.
• Promotion and support of young researchers.
• Contributions to university management.

Requirements:
• The applicant is to have a background in the Humanities with a clear focus on Visual Culture (possibilities range from digital media, film/video/TV/photography, to classical fine arts). They should be familiar with the philosophical and theoretical discourses of image theory. In addition, they are to have worked on the cultural determination of seeing and visual practices in a historical and/or social perspective.
• Habilitation or equivalent qualification in:
- Art History, or
- Media and Communication Studies, or
- Philosophy, or
- any other appropriate scientific denomination,
all of the above with a focus on Visual Culture.
• Excellent relevant performance in research and publication with international visibility.
• Pertinent university teaching experience and competence in the didactics of tertiary education.
• Leadership skills and the ability to work well in a team.

Desired additional qualifications:
• Experience with international and interdisciplinary research co-operations.
• Experience with the acquisition of research funds and the execution of projects based on third-party funding.
• Experience in Gender Studies.
• Interest in interdisciplinary co-operations between Schools, especially concerning technological aspects.
• Competence in gender mainstreaming and diversity management.

The duties of the Professorship require that the future Professor move the centre of their work life to Klagenfurt.

The salary will be individually negotiated. The minimum gross salary for a position at this level (Salary group A1 for University Staff / Kollektivvertrag für die Arbeitnehmer/innen der Universitäten) is currently € 67,000 per year.
