HOWARD UNIVERSITY WASHINGTON, DC. The Department of Philosophy is searching for a department chair to begin in Fall 2018. Howard University, classified as a doctoral/research institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is a comprehensive research university and a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). It is a residential campus of more than 10,000 students located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.

The Department of Philosophy offers a B.A. in Philosophy and consists of 7 faculty members and 1 staff member. We are looking for an experienced administrator and committed scholar to build on the existing strengths of the department and to facilitate the department’s participation in several interdisciplinary degree programs. We have needs in the areas of 20th century continental philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and epistemology, but distinguished applicants in other areas of philosophy are also welcome. We are a pluralistic department with special strengths in Africana philosophy, philosophy of law, normative ethics, and bioethics. Applicants must have a strong record of research, teaching, and professional service commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor and evidence of effective communication and organizational skills.
