Job Description:

The Philosophy Department at the United Arab Emirates University invites qualified candidates to apply for a fulltime faculty position in philosophy to begin in the Fall Semester 2016 (August start). Candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching excellence, a demonstrable research capability that will enable the candidate to develop and sustain a research program, publish research findings in refereed journals or equivalent, and actively engage in promoting the growth of philosophy at the UAE University. The Philosophy Department at UAEU is robust and dynamic. It hosts a vibrant research seminar series, regional and international conferences, and world-class visitors. The faculty are all active researchers in diverse fields. The primary duties of the successful candidate are teaching, research, and service to the university and the community. The main teaching load is in the university’s General Education program, particularly in courses on critical thinking and applied ethics. The application package should include a cover letter, a detailed resume, a brief description of current/future research activities, teaching philosophy, courses taught and the names and contact details of three referees. English is the language of instruction and communication.

Applicants must possess a PhD degree in philosophy from an internationally recognized and reputable university. Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply; however, preference will be given to those with relevant university teaching and research experience in academic environments where English is the medium of instruction. Those applying for the ranks of Associate Professor or Full Professor will need commensurately higher levels of publication and professional activity.
The AOS is open, though the department will look favourably on candidates who can demonstrate the capacity to teach critical thinking and applied ethics and whose research profile complements the profiles of current faculty members of the department. Teaching is primarily in English, though bilingual Arabic/English will be highly regarded. Competence in, experience with, and a willingness to use new technologies in teaching are highly desirable. This technology includes, but is not limited to, e-teaching platforms such as Blackboard, Moodle and iPads, and classroom technology such as SMART Boards. Experience in teaching in multicultural contexts, where most students are not native speakers of English, is also highly desirable.

Successful candidates are expected to:

1. Have a strong commitment to develop and teach effectively a variety of undergraduate courses with emphasis on the General Education courses in Critical Thinking and various types of Ethics.
2. Contribute to the continuous improvement of curriculum courses and programs through periodic assessment of their outcomes.
3. Undertake research in his/her area of expertise, preferably with a view to supporting this research with external grant funding.
4. Advise and mentor undergraduate students.
5. Undertake academic administrative tasks as appropriate for university faculty members and assume an appropriate level of departmental responsibilities.
6. Work effectively with others in a multicultural academic and professional environment.
7. Demonstrate collegial interpersonal skills.
8. Communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
9. Contribute effectively to our continuous academic growth, research development, and outstanding service.

Note that contracts are for four years and are renewable subject to satisfactory performance and ongoing need for the position.
Competitive tax-free salary and free accommodation.
