Job Description:
The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Science of the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment in Ancient Philosophy at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2017.

Candidates must hold a PhD in Philosophy or a closely related field by the date of appointment, or shortly thereafter. They must have demonstrated excellence in teaching and research and a demonstrated record of ongoing development in both. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by strong letters of reference, teaching evaluations, and dossier and/or syllabi submitted as part of the application. The successful candidate must be able to teach a wide range of courses in philosophy from the introductory to advanced levels, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The ability to teach courses in non-western philosophy will be an asset. Moreover, the successful candidate will engage actively in the graduate Collaborative Program in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy (CPAMP) at the University of Toronto.

The successful candidate’s research will focus on Ancient Philosophy. The candidate will be expected to conduct innovative research at the highest international level. Broad research interests and expertise within the field of ancient philosophy are especially desirable. Strong evidence of excellence in research is required, demonstrated by publications in leading journals relevant to the field, presentations at significant conferences, and strong endorsements by referees of high international standing.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Toronto has three campuses, St. George, Scarborough, and Mississauga, each with its own Department of Philosophy offering undergraduate programs. The advertised position is on the downtown St. George campus. The Graduate Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto is a tri-campus department, consisting of the philosophy faculty appointed on all three campuses. Graduate teaching and supervision typically take place on the St. George campus.
