Informal information (VCM)

The TU/e philosophy and ethics department currently has 12 regular faculty members, 7 PostDocs and 7 PhD students (Emily Sullivan will join us from TU Delft in January as Assistant Professor). Its strengths are mainly in technology-related philosophy, but faculty members pursue a wide range of research interests. We are part of the 4TU Centre for Ethics and Technology (currently administered from Eindhoven). 4TU + Utrecht just acquired a large 'Gravitation' grant (17M€ for 10 years) on the 'ethics of socially disruptive technologies'.

The teaching load is modest, and faculty usually have one of the four quarters without teaching.

I think this is a very attractive job - both at Assistant and at Associate levels. The Assistant position will become permanent unless a disaster happens. Generally, the translation of the Dutch system into US terms like 'Assistant Professor' is a bit misleading since in NL older Assistant Professors have tenure, and 'Associate' is always tenured and often held by senior people. Promotion to higher levels on merit is encouraged, without the need for a 'position' to be available at the department.

The deadline was extended a bit beyond the Christmas holidays ... though we already had >100 applications by the 5th.

I am happy to answer questions.
